In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Law 101-336, the CSLB provides « reasonable accommodation » for applicants with disabilities that may affect their ability to take the required exams. It is the applicant`s responsibility to notify the CSLB of the necessary alternative arrangements. The CSLB is not required by the ADA to provide special accommodation if it is not aware of specific needs. People outside the state can apply for a California license if they meet the qualifications. Several states have reciprocal agreements with California, making it easy to get a license. A person may act as a person eligible for more than one active licence only if one of the following conditions is met: A licence may be granted to an individual, partnership, partnership, limited liability company or joint venture. The license belongs to the holder of a single license, partnership, corporation, or limited liability company registered with the California Secretary of State, or to the combination of licensees who are part of the joint venture. Any company or person that constructs or modifies buildings, highways, roads, parks, railroads, excavations, or other structures in California must be authorized by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) if the total cost (labor and materials) of one or more contracts for the project is $500 or more. Contractors, including subcontractors, trade contractors and individuals engaged in the home renovation sector (with the exception of joint ventures and projects that require federal funding), must be licensed before submitting bids. Licenses can be granted to individuals, partnerships, corporations, limited liability companies or joint ventures. The review process consists of two parts.
All qualified individuals must pass the standard examination in law and economics. In addition, qualified individuals, with the exception of the Limited Specialty Classification C-61, must pass a second test that covers the specific commercial or certification field for which they are applying. An eligible person, or simply « qualifier, » is the person on file with theLBS who meets the experience and examination requirements for the licence. An eligible person is required for each classification in each licence issued by the CSLB. Contractors working with asbestos or other hazardous substances are regulated by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), as well as the CSLB. These contractors are subject to a number of certification, registration, reporting and security requirements. Each exam is a multiple-choice test with options A, B, C, or D. There is no writing.
The law test consists of 115 questions. Specialized exams are between 100 and 120 questions. The test is limited in time. The state allows 3.5 hours for each exam and you will receive the results immediately after each test. When you have completed your first test (usually the law), you can start the second exam immediately, you do not have to wait until the 3.5 hours have passed. Usually, the state takes about 5 to 6 weeks from the time you apply to schedule an exam, but you can test as early as two weeks if you wish. The CSLB grants licences for the award of contracts in certain trades or areas of the construction profession. Each trade is recognized as a « classification ». You can add as many classifications to your license as you can qualify. If you have a partnership license, your qualifier can be one of the general partners (designated as a qualified partner) or the RME. A study guide for each exam will be sent to you with your notification of the appearance of the exam.
The study guides list the subjects covered by the exam, show how each area is weighted, and recommend resources to study. This step explains which experience is eligible for the contractor`s audit. To qualify as a licensed contractor, a person must be at least 18 years of age and have the experience and skills required to manage the day-to-day operations of a construction company, including field supervision.
