Brownlee LLP`s lawyers donate their time each month to the Edmonton Community Legal Centre through a clinic of 4 to 5 Brownlee lawyers. They provide legal information and advice on a wide range of legal issues. In addition, many of the firm`s lawyers give their time individually to this case. The Edmonton Community Legal Centre provides free legal information and advice to low- and middle-income people in the Edmonton area. The Edmonton Community Legal Centre is one of seven legal clinics in Alberta available for legal assistance. Other clinics are located in: Fort McMurray, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie. Thanks to a grant from the Community Initiatives Program, we were able to add a full-time lawyer to the staff in 2008 and received full funding for the Alberta Law Foundation position starting in 2010. Over the years, we have also developed many programs to meet the needs of our community and we are very proud of the innovation that 2009 brought to the entire central Alberta region via videoconference.

The clinic is still a leader in service delivery through technology today. In our 10 years of existence, we have received incredible volunteer support from over half of the members of the Central Alberta Bar Society and have benefited from their generous financial support. Many of our current volunteers have been with us since the clinic opened! We learned about Calgary Legal Guidance`s photo identification program and worked hard to bring this service to central Alberta in 2009. Legal advice and support for immigrants and refugees seeking help in a variety of immigration matters (with the exception of citizenship). In 2013, the clinic answered the call to help people in family law matters and launched the Family Lawyer Project in provincial and Queen`s Bench courts. We managed this program for 3 years until it was handed over to the Legal Aid Directorate in December 2015.
