German borrowed the French word cartel as cartel. In the 1880s, the Germans found a new use to designate the economic coalition of private industries to regulate the quality and quantity of goods to be produced, the prices to be paid, the terms of delivery to be demanded and the markets to be supplied. The noun agreement means « agreement » or « conformity ». It often occurs in legal, commercial or political contexts where it is synonymous with contract and other similar words for a formal agreement. In Middle English, agree agreen was formed and had the different meanings of « please, satisfy, agree, agree ». It was borrowed from the Anglo-French Agreer. This word consists of a-, a prefix forming a verb derived from the Latin ad-, and -greer, a verbal derivative of will, meaning « gratitude, satisfaction, sympathy, pleasure, approval ». The French base derives from the Latin grātum, the neuter of grātus, which means « grateful, received with gratitude, welcome, pleasant ». Semantically the etymology of agree is very nice. The word « agreement » means to work according to an opinion identical to « harmony. » Concordat is a French word for a formal agreement between two or more parties. It is synonymous with words like pact and covenant, but in the 17th century it was established as the official name for an agreement between church and state to regulate ecclesiastical affairs. A historic concordat is that concluded in 1801 between Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul and Pope Pius VII. It defines the status of the Roman Catholic Church in France and regulates relations between church and state.
As indignant as he was at this impertinence, there was something so exquisite absurd about a cartel so provocative that Nicholas was forced to bite his lip and read the note two or three times before he could muster enough gravity and severity to address the enemy messenger who had not taken his eyes off the ceiling. Nor did he change the expression of his face in the slightest. — Charles Dickens, Nicholas Nickleby, 1838 As a verb, compromise means giving up something you want in order to reach mutual agreement (« The union and the employer have agreed on a compromise »). Another meaning is « exposing distrust, discredit, or mischief, » as in « The actor`s career was ruined by his politically incorrect tweets » or « The editor would not compromise his principles. » And as mentioned above, it can mean putting someone or something in danger, endangering or serious consequences. Confidential information, national security or the immune system could be labeled « compromised. » The composition is derived from the Latin composito, which in turn comes from compositus, the anterior participle of componere, meaning « to assemble ». Since its beginnings in the 14th century, composition has acquired a number of meanings based on the arrangement or setting up of something. A meaning group refers to the results of composition, or rather composition. He now openly announced that he did not intend to respect the harmony of Salamanca and that he would never accept an agreement that would interfere in any way with his and his wife`s exclusive property. — William H. Prescott, The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, 1838 In the 17th century, the cartel referred to a written agreement between the belligerent nations, particularly for the treatment and exchange of prisoners.
This usage is illustrated by Bishop Gilbert Burnet in his History of His Own Time (1734): « By a cartel settled between the two armies, all prisoners were to be redeemed at a fixed price and within a limited time. » The word « repentance » means to repent of something wrong that has happened, which is the same as « regret/repentance. » In secular law, the term « covenant » is used to refer to an official agreement or covenant (« an international covenant on human rights »). It may also apply to a contract or a promise in a contract for the performance or non-performance of an act (« a duty not to sue »). But the contract can refer to any agreement between two or more parties that is legally enforceable. Typically, a contract creates an obligation on each party to do something (e.g., to provide goods or services at a specified price and according to a specific schedule). It can also create an obligation not to do something (for example, disclose sensitive information about the company). Concord comes from the Latin concord-, concors, both of which mean « agree » and are rooted in com-, which means « together », and cord-, cor-, which means « heart ». Translated literally, latin terms are united by « hearts together, » which is why early meanings of English harmony include « a state of agreement, » « harmony, » and « chord. » The meaning of the word « agreement by provision, pact or alliance » comes next, and over time harmony refers to a treaty that establishes peace and friendly relations among peoples or nations. Thus, two countries can sign an agreement on issues that have led to hostility in the past and live in peace and harmony. EDITOR`S NOTE: There are other words that refer to different types of agreements – such as deal, pact, promise, settlement and contract – but we only promised the A, B and C. We have kept that promise. The Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Council (ASRB) adopted a resolution on the 29th. Convention is a colloquial word for a large gathering of people that usually lasts several days to talk about their work or common interests – for example, a teachers` or publishers` conference – or for a common purpose. In politics, a traditional convention is a meeting of delegates from a political party for the purpose of formulating a platform and selecting candidates for office (e.g., the Democratic/Republican National Convention). Other conventions are fan-based, and there are countless such conventions that focus on games, comics, and the genres of anime, sci-fi, and horror, to name a few. This use of conventions is consistent with their ancestry.
The word comes from the Latin convenire, which means « to gather, to gather. » The Latin root also means « to agree » or « to accept, » which is recognizable in the sense of the word in terms of established usage, customs, rules, techniques or practices widely accepted and followed. « Agreement. » Merriam-Webster.com Thesaurus, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/agreement. The French word derives from the Latin compromissum, which itself is related to the past participle compromittere (promittere means « to promise »). In English, compromit was once used as a synonym for the verb compromised in its obsolete sense « to bind by mutual agreement » and in its modern sense « to cause the deficiency of ». Of course, we all know that the composition achieved in Korea is not satisfactory for America, but it is much better than continuing the bloody and dismal sacrifice of life without any possible strictly military victory in sight. — Dwight D.
Eisenhower, speech, August 19, 1954 This nominal meaning is often used without a qualifying adjective (such as good or bad) to indicate that something is being bought or sold at a price below its real value – in other words, a good deal: « At this price, the house is a good deal » or « We made a good deal on the tickets for our flight. » In grammar, agreement refers to the fact or state of elements of a sentence or clause that are the same in terms of gender, number or person – that is, correspondence.
