The title of the first book is taken from a quote from Homer in The Odyssey: « The blade itself incites acts of violence. » Jezal (unpopular I know, but I was so weird with myself. He was so incredibly conceited and had no idea of his extreme vanity that it was really funny. I honestly think Joe wanted to write him as a comic character for the first book and a half) In association with Blind Ferret Entertainment, The First Law – The Comic was adapted by Chuck Dixon, with graphics by Andie Tong, colors by Pete Pantazis, lettering and design by Bill Tortolini. Only the first four chapters have been published. Although there has been no official announcement, no further chapters are planned. Joe Abercrombie commented: « Unfortunately it is currently parked. I was very happy about it, but it just wasn`t successful enough – graphic novels are a tough market unless you`re dealing with established real estate. If the physical editions continue to sell, there is a chance that they will be launched again. We`il see. The book follows 3 different characters as war breaks out on two fronts. To the south, Sand dan Glokta and his inquisitors attempted to repel a Gurkish invasion of the city of Dagoska, the only Union possession on the continent, which had been won at a high price a few decades earlier. To the north, the book follows Colonel West and the Scandinavians as they attempt to deal with Bethod, who intends to drive the Union out of Angland, his most important possession in the north.
Finally, the book follows ninefinger`s lodges and his companions on their journey to the far west of their world with the sorcerer Bayaz, the first of the Three Kings, in search of a powerful and dangerous ancient artifact known as Sami. The book makes it clear that all these events are interconnected and are part of the larger machinations of a sorcerer named Khalul, the second of the three kings and one of Bayaz`s enemies. Khalul raised a large army of slaves and eaters (cannibal humanoids with increased durability and magical abilities) and indirectly gave Bethod an alliance with the Flatheads, orc-like creatures created as weapons in an ancient war, as well as a man known to be feared and supernaturally almost immune to damage. The story ends on a quiet note for all the groups involved: Dagoska is lost to the Gurkish, an intrigue sees the two heirs to the throne killed and an innocent man is blamed for political reasons, the search for the seed is a dismal failure, and Bethod remains free in the north. A Little Hatred (2019) is the beginning of a new trilogy set about 28 years after the events of the original trilogy. The focus is on a new cast of characters, many of whom are children of characters from previous novels. Old roads are being swept away as the Union enters an industrial era, with chimneys soaring across midderland, but that doesn`t mean the old forces have disappeared or things have improved. The slums are smouldering with discontent that could open up the new world, even as a new generation of Scandinavians, led by Stour Nightfall, again tries to drive the Union out of England. The story arc of the Age of Madness trilogy (with the characters Leo dan Brock, Savine dan Glokta, Orso dan Luthar, Rikke, Gunnar Broad, Vick dan Teufel and Jonas Clover) begins in the year 605: I don`t really have a 6-10.
I like Glokta, Tunny and others, but I didn`t really interfere with the other characters. I know it`s extremely unpopular, but I didn`t like Schauer as much as POV. I love him very much now and I`m glad he keeps kicking. But I could take his point of view or leave. Cosca: It gets the best lines in the entire series and is so deceptively well written. Everyone thinks his character was ruined in Red Country, but the truth is that he was drunk throughout the book while giving food for thought for Best Served Cold. He has a quote that sums up his entire character and most of Joe`s characters: « Sometimes men change for the better. Sometimes men change for the worse.
And often, very often, they are given time and opportunities. He waved his bottle for a while, then shrugged. « They`re going back. » The Heroes story arc (with the characters Bremer dan Gorst, Prince Calder, Curnden Craw, Finree dan Brock, Tunny and Beck): The best served cold story arc (with the characters Monza Murcatto, Nicomo Cosca, Castor Morveer, Friendly, Caul Shivers and Cas Shenkt): The series is followed by the three independent novels, in which some of the secondary characters of the trilogy play important roles. Best Served Cold (2009) is set in Styria, a land of hostile city-states, and follows mercenary general Monza Murcatto. After being thrown down a mountain by her employer, she takes revenge with a motley team of foreigners. Set seven years after the trilogy, The Heroes (2011) revolves around another war between the Union and the North, culminating in the three-day battle for a ring of stones called The Heroes. And finally, Red Country (2012) is set in the Far Land about thirteen years after the original trilogy. Teenager Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past, but she doesn`t hesitate to do what needs to be done if her brother and sister are kidnapped, just with her cowardly old stepfather as company. In 2011, Abercrombie signed a contract with Gollancz for four more books set in the world of the First Law.
However, before returning to the world of the First Law, he wrote three books for young readers, titled The Shattered Sea Trilogy. In 2015, he announced that he had begun thinking about another trilogy in the world of the First Law. Under the title The Age of Madness, the first book, A Little Hatred, was published in September 2019. A second book entitled The Trouble With Peace followed in September 2020. The first of the independent books takes place about three years after the trilogy. It takes place entirely in Styria, an island-continent reminiscent of Italy during the Italian Wars and focuses on the revenge of a betrayed mercenary leader, Monza Murcatto. The original trilogy includes the novels The Blade Itself (2006), Before They Are Hanged (2007) and Last Argument of Kings (2008). The story follows the intertwined fates and misfortunes of six characters; Logen Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar, Sand dan Glokta, Ferro Maljinn, The Dogman and Collem West. Everyone is drawn into the plan of Bayaz, a sorcerer of the ancient period whose magical abilities are surpassed only by his political skill. The first book introduces the three main characters of the trilogy and three secondary characters. Logen Ninefingers is a warrior who gained a formidable reputation for bringing Bethod to power in the north, but has since fallen out with him.
Logen and his small team of friends flee after being attacked by Shanka creatures. Logen is separated from his team and goes his own way. He meets Bayaz, a powerful secular mage, who enlists Logen`s help to accompany him to Adua. Sand dan Glokta investigates the Inquisition in a corruption case, which leads him to uncover broader corruption among traders. His superiors distract him to investigate Bayaz. Jezal, a vain young nobleman who became an officer in the Union Army because of his connections, is training for a prestigious sword fighting tournament. He falls in love with Ardee, the sister of his superior Collem, and wins the tournament with Bayaz`s help. At a party, Bayaz is challenged to prove who he is by entering the house of the Creator.
The main characters of the book gather to accompany Bayaz into the building. Bayaz retrieves an artifact and announces his plan to retrieve the seed, a powerful magical artifact that can help him confront Khalul and the Gurkish Empire. The book also follows the journey of Logen`s companions, led by Dogman, to warn Bethod about the Shanka, and Ferro, an escaped Gurki slave who travels with another mage to find Bayaz. This book focuses on a three-day battle taking place in the same world as the First Law trilogy, about seven years after the events of the original trilogy. The Union commander, Lord Marshal Kroy, led Union forces against the much smaller Army of the North commanded by Black Dow. The story contains many characters that have been seen in previous novels of the First Law, such as Bremer dan Gorst, Lord Marshal Kroy and the Dogman. [14] The story arc of the original trilogy (with the characters Logen Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar, Sand dan Glokta, Dogman, Collem West and Ferro Maljinn): The revolution is fast and a new change is taking place in the Union. The first to leave are the banks of Master Bayaz.
Savine dan Glokta manages to become the heroine of the people and the mother of the nation after her fight against the rebel leaders, and her husband manages to gather enough forces to take control of the government. After discovering that Savine and King Orso are linked, he manages to drop the king and announce that his newborn son (Savine had twins) was the new one. The ex-king Orso is hanged, which leads to new tensions between him and his wife. A new order is created. In the north, Rikke manages to defeat Calder and becomes the undisputed ruler of the north. In the end, it is shown that the real master planner of the failed rebellion is Savine`s father, Glokta. He wanted to free the Union from Bayaz`s influence. And in his daughter`s words, he set fire to half the world so he could rule the other half. The Bayaz banks no longer exist, and with them goes his control over the Union. Takes place 15 years after the end of Red Country. The Union has entered the early industrial era and the North is again invading Angland. New characters are introduced, Crown Prince Orso (son of King Jezal and Queen Terez) and Savine dan Glokta (daughter of Sand dan Glokta and Ardee West).
